Nikos Hadjiapostolou
Operetta in three acts
City of Athens Symphony Orchestra & Chorus
‘The Apaches of Athens’ need no introduction: for older and younger generations alike, this entertaining work by Greek composer Nikos Hadjiapostolou succeeds in depicting the most vivid picture of an entire era: the lifestyle of both the upper and working classes of Athens during the interwar years create the background for the romantic entanglements of an apache, a city tramp; the operetta is infamous for the beauty of her exquisite and popular melodies, perhaps among the finest of the genre. Vasilis Mavrogeorgiou stages Olympia’s newest production, and leads a cast of exceptional singers, as they are caught in a swirling musical feast, reminiscent of the Viennese style.
