TRADITIONAL SONGS FROM EUROPE

City of Athens Chorus

In Western music, choral singing engages in an exciting dialogue between tradition and modernity. The rich polyphonic heritage of European countries has been a source of inspiration for classical composers, who draw melodies and rhythms from European folk traditions, thus carrying the emotional impact of a collective creation orally transmitted into the world of formal musical composition. This process has benefitted over time, both from the rise of national consciousness during the 19th century and the systematization of ethnomusicology in the 20th century. The City of Athens Chorus brings to the fore the role of tradition in the works by classical composers, performing Western European traditional songs in choral arrangements by Johannes Brahms, Béla Bartók, Antonin Dvořák, Zoltán Kodály, Ralph Vaughan-Williams.
