Concert version 

Mysterious, still transparent, like a child’s eyes: these are the words that philosopher Vladimir Jankélévitch uses to describe the music by Gabriel Fauré. In his mature period, the composer, fascinated by Greek Antiquity, draws inspiration from “Odyssey” for his musical drama “Pénélope”, based on a libretto by René Fauchois. The unwavering loyalty of Pénélope, the return of Odysseus to his homeland and the merry conclusion of the myth after the slaughter of the suitors weave an enticing musical universe, echoing the influence by both Gluck and Wagner.  

“Pénélope” is the composer’s only opera and is presented for the first time in Greece: the Athens State Orchestra, within the frame of its collaboration with Olympia, and a brilliant cast of French and Greek singers breathe life to the epic heroes, rendering the subtle psychological nuances of the narrative. Among the artists, Olympia welcomes back conductor Pierre Dumoussaud and soprano Catherine Hunold, after their acclaimed performances in the opera “Soeur Béatrice” by Dimitri Mitropoulos.

Celebrating Easter, the City of Athens Symphony Orchestra and Chorus present works of sacred music honoring the tradition of Protestant, Orthodox and Catholic Church. In this solemn programme are included magnificent compositions, such as the monumental Psalm 114 by Mendelssohn for double chorus and orchestra, the “Great Russian Easter Overture” by Rimsky-Korsakov, which relates to the Russian Orthodox liturgy, and the Requiem by Fauré, the best-known of his large works· compared to the dramatic masterpieces by Verdi, Brahms and Berlioz, Fauré’s Requiem is a delicate work of ethereal beauty that focuses on eternal rest and consolation.

Workshop of Greek Music

Betty Harlafti collaborates with the Workshop of Greek Music, in a concert dedicated to Lefteris Papadopoulos. The renowned lyricist has offered us more than a thousand songs, and their immediacy, popularity, and poetic depth have left their everlasting mark in our hearts. The concert follows the ongoing collaboration between the esteemed performer and Lefteris Papadopoulos, who entrusted her with the unreleased song “Thelo na tragoudiso” (“I Want to Sing”), set in music by Mikis Theodorakis, which was recorded by the Greek National Radio in its premiere.

Gioachino Rossini

Opera in two acts 

The highly successful production of the National Opera of Greece (2013/14) is being revived at the Olympia for four performances, featuring an exceptional cast of performers. Rossini composes an ingenious comic opera full of humor and twists. The plot is based on Charles Perrault’s “Cinderella”, but Jacopo Ferretti’s libretto adapts the story to the time when the opera was written. Rodula Gaitanou stages the action in the microcosm of an off-Broadway theatre in New York City in the 1930s, during the period of the Great Depression and the economic crash. Thus, the story is modernized to highlight social and moral reflections in a time and place that resonate more with today’s audience’s references.

City of Athens Symphony Orchestra

The orchestral suite “Four Sea Interludes” from the opera “Peter Grimes” by the gifted composer Benjamin Britten has inspired the title “The Sea” in a programme of captivating symphonic repertoire. The story is set in an isolated fishing village, where the inhabitants experience a dark drama. The invited soloist for the concert is Emmanuelle Bertrand, one of the most prominent cellists of her generation.  

She will perform the heartrending Cello Concerto in E minor, composed by Edward Elgar after the end of World War I. It is one of the most popular works among musicians and audiences alike, thanks to its confessional mood and poignant lyricism. The programme concludes with the masterful Symphony No. 3 by Jean Sibelius.

City of Athens Symphony Orchestra 

The Austrian composer Anton Bruckner is undoubtedly one of the major figures of late Romanticism. His symphonies, animated by subtlety and grandiosity, are refined works of art that portray the composer’s existential and spiritual quest. His fourth symphony premiered in 1881, in Vienna, and it has been extremely popular ever since. The composer himself defined it as “Romantic”, thus stating his intention to celebrate the unsurpassable natural beauty, pulsating with a spiritual dimension, and the simple pleasures of a life close to nature, valued across the German literature in the early 19th century. Great composer Hugo Wolf, appreciative of the magnificent vision of the fourth symphony, ranks Bruckner among Beethoven and Liszt, at a time when his work is not yet widely known.

A young girl sails a boat to the unknown, escaping war. She finds refuge in a foreign land and lies to rest under the statue of a soldier. To her amazement, the statue suddenly becomes alive. Can a girl and a statue become friends and travel the world together? Will the girl convince the statue to give up his sword? Written in an imaginary language that is meant to be understood by everyone, the play is a hymn to peace, friendship, diversity and the power of love. Olympia is happy to host this exciting music theatre production that premiered in Nicosia, in November 2021, within the context of Nicosia International Festival; since then, the performance, highly acclaimed by critics and audiences alike, has already toured in Armenia, Tunisia, Lithuania and Croatia.
